Where in the World Have I been?

No, I didn't fall off the ends of the earth! Just haven't gotten around to posting for awhile.
My girls are going to start kidding in about a month, I am very late this year. Most years, I already would be done and have bottle babies galore!
I am changing my management somewhat this year. I bred all of the youngsters to a Boer buck and will be keeping some of the doe kids. I plan on reducing the milking herd, as the market seems to be swinging towards meat production and not milk.
I hope I will be better about posting! Keep in touch and let me know what you want to see in the newsletter.
Have a great spring!!

Fill out the Goat Source Survey and get a free gift!!

Hi, Fall is clearly here and there is a definite nip in the air in the mornings!I have been fighting with the lighting over the goat pens now for the last month. I had the electrician come out to fix one of the lights. While he was here, I had him replace the sensor and bulb in the other light and wouldn't you know - it hasn't worked since!! He has been out at least 3 times since and each time, the light will work for one night and then crap out!! I hate doing chores in the dark!! I can tell I'm feeding SOMETHING just not exactly WHAT!! Goats, I hope.
I have a new survey form on my website. Please take the time to fill it out for me. If I know what you want to see in the Newsletter, I can make it more interesting for you. Get a free gift just for filling the survey out!! CLICK HERE.

Want a real rush? Try almost stepping on a grumpy rattlesnake!! That was my excitement for the weekend. Went for a walk in the pasture, down by the pond on a friends place and saw a movement and heard the warning buzz!! It's a good thing he was pretty cold! Now he's real cold - all 31 inches and seven buttons of him. My Grandpa said they taste like chicken (wouldn't you know!) but I declined the invite. In the last two years, my friend and both of his dogs have been bitten. Compare - The first dog - 700$ vet bill. The second dog, under 100$ (no anti-venom was needed). My friend - 47,000$!! Yes that's FORTY SEVEN THOUSAND Dollars!! He should have gone to the vet!!
Hope this finds you well and snake free!!

Practicing veterinary medicine without a license

In my August Newsletter, I included an article about giving your own injections. As one of my readers pointed out, "You should be much more careful giving veterinary advice in your newsletter. You should not be encouraging hobbyists to even try IV injections in their goats. They often do not understand the difference between their goats and someone else's goats. One can get into a lot of trouble for practicing veterinary medicine without a license."
I certainly did not intend to encourage people to practice medicine on other people's animals! I have raised goats for over 25 years and I absolutely will not give anyone else's goat a shot!! I did say in the description of IV injections that most people would leave this to their vet (I certainly will). I don't even draw blood - that's the vet's job!!
Soooo... I am going to edit the newsletter to make this more clear and I hope that all goat owners will know their own limits - Learn to do all you can but learn from a professional and don't exceed your comfort zone. Doing a procedure incorrectly could kill your goat.
Thank you Kate for pointing this out!!
